My Pioneering Life

I'm loving '09! I have been working hard on my website relaunch and already got some speaking bookings without even trying. Don't you just love life in flow? New website and keynotes speeches available very, very soon.

The radio show is going from strength to strength and there are some really interesting guests coming on. Do let me know of any topics or guests you would like to hear.

I've been salsa dancing at a fab new venue in Leeds called Floridita - wonderful dance floor and a live band every Friday night. Had a wonderful dinner there too this weekend for one of my best friend's birthday. Oh yes indeed, yummy!

I had such fun doing the filming for it. Now that I know so much more about my strengths I can quite happily say yes to more speaking, TV, radio and not feel like perhaps I'm an egomaniac for wanting to do them. I'm simply applying some of my strengths in my business. Cool, eh?

For some of the group filming was an ordeal. Something they had to do to get their message across or promote their business. It's difficult to do tasks that weaken you because they are not one of your strengths or perhaps that trigger your emotional baggage. I'd like to say well done to them as they did well.

As I mentioned in my note before the holiday season, I'm getting more organised and have now got some administrative support in place and am growing a business support team. I anticipate it may well take a few months to catch up on backlog and put systems in place. It feels good to commit myself to this kind of support, like the final cobwebs of self-sabotage have blown away...

I think for probably the first time in my life I'm really looking forward to Valentine's Day this year. I've kept it reasonably quiet until now as it's still very early days. However, I've been wondering how I can write about my life without mentioning that I'm in a new relationship?

All I'll say for now is, so far so good! It would appear that I have learned lots of lessons from the last couple of years in particular, as this relationship is loving, romantic, I'm being treated wonderfully and I'm constantly getting lovely surprises. I have learned from the past that a few months is not long enough to really be able to judge true compatibility so I'm making no predictions at this time. You'll just have to be patient and wait and see what happens - just like me.

Pioneering Business

I was asked as part of filming the coaching tip for Britain's Next Top Coach to define what success is and this is what I came up with:

"What if success is a combination of applying strategies that work for you and your particular mix of strengths and having the character and pioneering spirit to overcome the internal and external challenges you may face on your journey."

Let me share with you an example from my own business of how this could apply.

I've been working a lot in my business on distilling what I mean by being pioneering and how people can profit from that, into something simple to say. The result - so far - is three key questions that I feel are both simple and significant for business owners and people managers.

Of course it's one thing me thinking that, it's another knowing that because I've checked it with you. So I've put together a brief survey to see how do they work for you? (The survey is at http://tinyurl.com/d8p8x2 and three lucky winners will receive free coaching!)

Here is how I see this working...

I'm applying (taking action) a strategy (market research) that works for my strengths (communicating with a number of people) and having the character and pioneering spirit to overcome the internal (to lay myself wide open to your feedback) and external challenges (lack of knowledge) that I'm facing on this journey of relaunching my business.

What are you working on (or perhaps procrastinating on!) that would benefit from this thinking right now? Ask yourself the following questions:


  • What strategies could I apply?

  • What decisions and/or actions would that require me to take?

  • What internal challenges could that bring up for me?

  • What external challenges might I face as a result of these strategies and/or actions

  • growth would I achieve as a result of going ahead and doing this?

  • Will I do this? If so, when?

  • How committed am I to doing this on a scale of 1-10?


Hint, if your commitment level is less than a 7 out of 10 then you probably won't do it. If that is the case, look again at the internal and external challenges to see where the sticking point is. What could you do about that?

Remember whatever you decide to do - do something. It will massively increase your chances of success.

7 Mistakes Pioneers Avoid in Business…


Mistake #1: Not starting your business in the first place
There are numerous reasons that people want to start a business yet don’t:
• Fear of failure (or success!) and how that would feel
• Lack of clarity about what you want to do. This could be because you don’t know yourself well enough or recognise your true gifts and talents. It could be because what you want to do doesn’t fit into an existing or traditional business model and you’re confused as to why you’re drawn to certain areas but then are put off doing them as a business. The answer is probably that you’re a pioneer and actually could be creating something new, different and exciting!
• Not enough self belief
• False optimism – believing things will get better on their own

If you don’t start it how will you know? Often a business idea can be explored and even tested part-time…

Mistake #2: Not recognising and valuing your talents
In our society, when something comes easy it tends to be undervalued. A talent can be as simple as you looking at the world, a situation or a person your way and seeing something different. You don’t have to have gone to university to study it. It might not be something you discussed with your career advisor in school. Does that make it any less valuable? No.

Ask your colleagues, friends and families what they most appreciate about you and you might be surprised at the answers…

Mistake #3: Not having a longer-term vision and dream
The trouble with many business ideas is that they’re too small. As somebody said, 
“If you’re going to bother thinking, you might as well think big”.
 To get up off your behind and keep going requires excitement, passion and a sense of purpose! Develop your idea until you can see, feel and taste what a big impact it could have on your customers and on your life. Give your idea some TLC:
• Time – time to give it some attention, to work on it and allow it to incubate
• Love – some positive energy to feed it and allow it to grow
• Creativity – yours and others (if they’re the right kind of positive people) to generate ideas, additions and tweaks to truly develop your idea

What if you could see the impact this dream could have in five years, in ten years? Not just on you but on the numbers of customers that would have benefited too.... Would that inspire you to take action?

One client came to me with an e-book for a particular market. By the end of the first session they weren't just thinking of how best to launch it, they had in mind a whole business model that included other activities (using their talents) in the short to medium term and in the long term included them being a major influencer to government policy. Now that's what I call an inspiring dream with a lot of meaning!

Mistake #4: Waiting until an idea is perfect before taking action
There’s nothing like a bit of perfectionism to encourage procrastination! The fact is that it will never be perfect, yet it can be perfect right now... Your business will probably never stop changing and evolving. Something I say to all my Pioneers is that 
“You’ve got to do it, to evolve it!”
The temptation though, is to wait until you’ve got that next bit of inspiration, until you have others’ approval, until you know 100 per cent that it will work exactly as you planned it. Trust me, that will never happen. The outcomes of our actions are out of our control. Taking action though, is our responsibility…

Mistake #5: Listening to the wrong people
There’s a heck of a lot of people out there who love to give advice. Believe me, most of them don’t know peanuts about setting up and running a business – particularly when they’re friends and family. Yet the fact that they’re in your life makes them think they have the right to tell you what to do and not do. That’s them being in YOUR business.

If there’s a pioneer inside you (and I believe there is with most people, even if it’s deeply hidden!) then don’t be put off by other's opinions. When you are concerned with other's opinions of you, you’re being in THEIR business.

The best way to make your life (let alone a business) work is for YOU to stay in YOUR business!

Mistake #6: Not being a pioneer on the inside first
The fact is that if you want your life to change, you have to change. There it is, I’ve said it - please don’t shoot the messenger! The responsibility for your life and happiness is yours, nobody else’s.

For you to own a successful business, you need to become the person that is capable of owning a successful business. For most people that is a journey of personal growth as well as whatever business learning is required.

The great news is that this journey will most likely have a positive impact on your personal life too...

Mistake #7: Not following your passions and purpose
Ask most people what is a ‘good job’ and they’ll probably answer being a doctor, solicitor, accountant, or a celebrity of some kind. Our conditioning by society means that many people believe that to have done well in their career that they have to go to university, get a degree and get a job. 

Newsflash! Times have changed. If your passions and your purpose mean that’s the path you’ve taken or plan to take then great. Many of you though may have taken that or a similar path and found it to be barren as a dessert, devoid of any meaning or lasting excitement.

What’s interesting is that you could even be using your talents but just not in a way that is pioneering for you. I used to work in public relations and I also worked in managing change in large organisations. I was pretty good at it but I didn’t get the same fulfilment that I do now, helping people to be pioneering with their start up businesses or in larger organisations. Now I get to mix my talents and gifts and interests in a way that works for my clients and works for me.

The Antidote to Procrastination: Succeed Fast!

When people procrastinate it is often because they have a fear of failure. Look at it this way, if you never finish (or even better, never start!) a project then you can’t fail at it can you?

Yet what you can do is talk about it as an option. You can plan it in your mind. You can focus on it and know that one day it will be a great success and visualise the wonderful end result, willing it towards you. You write it down or maybe put together some images that represent its success. That’s all very well but where is the real action?



I heard about the concept of ‘fail fast’ a year or so ago and loved it. It’s all about how you can’t see what works and what doesn’t until you actually do it. So say you decide to test a new headline on your website. If it does work, great! Or maybe it just needs some tweaks so again, take action and find out one way or another. If it fails, i.e. doesn’t work, then you know and you can move on to the next thing to try.



Think about it. The longer you wait to do it you’re loosing out more and more. If it does work then you could have succeeded and benefited so much faster. If it doesn’t work then you know for sure and are in a position to apply that learning in the future with your next attempt or project.



If you haven’t failed you haven’t lived. An old friend of mine said many years ago that if he wasn’t in trouble occasionally he wasn’t doing his job properly!



I’ve heard it said that it's not the person who fails that is the failure but the person who never starts... What if you changed the word failure to something else? What if when you had a failure you used another word instead? What about error, boob, slip up, blunder, miscalculation, disappointment, malfunction or letdown instead?



With this approach in mind, I decided to adopt this saying and tweak it to be more positive, hence it’s now ‘Succeed Fast!’ and applied to anything and everything in my life, from relationships to marketing tactics.

These terms & conditions are very basic and in place to ensure that there is clarity about how we work together in a collaborate way that demonstrates respect on both sides.

Public Workshops:
Your place is confirmed upon receipt of your verbal or written booking. Full payment to be received at least 10 days prior to the workshop. 

If you need to cancel your booking that will incur a 50% administration fee within 14 days of the workshop. If you cancel within 2 working days of the workshop the full amount is incurred.

4.            the first species of plant or animal life to begin living in a previously unoccupied site, for example, a moss beginning to grow on otherwise bare rock

Can Confidence Overcome Jealousy?

Have you ever experienced the havoc and destruction wreaked by what is often called the ‘green eyed monster’; jealousy. This is one of the negative based realities released through The Lotus Seed Process.

What is jealousy all about? People often think of it as being jealous of a third party in the relationship and has been defined as follows:

“Jealousy typically refers to the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that occur when a person believes a valued relationship is being threatened by a rival. This rival may have no knowledge of threatening the relationship”

Now, there may be times when the relationship is threatened and what you are feeling is your intuition coming into play. That’s a whole different ball game, for another article perhaps…

There may also be occasions where a partner’s behaviour is inappropriately flirtatious. This requires the confidence to be open about how this behaviour makes you feel and to communicate assertively so the situation is resolved. If your partner finds it hard to let go of this behaviour, I’d suggest it’s more to do with their lack of confidence and them looking for repeated ego boosts. If they won’t do anything about that (such as have an initial conversation with me or some other professional), then look at how you can help them to feel better about themselves. Show them you appreciate them, tell them you love them, initiate sex with them – you might not feel like doing these things yet sometimes when you act the feelings follow…

I’d ask you to consider whether jealousy crops up in your life regularly. Do you feel insecure when you hear of others’ successes? Has jealousy been a common theme in your relationships – either from your or your partner’s perspective? Do you feel jealous even at the thought of an ex-partner being with somebody else – even though you don’t want to be with them!

If so, then the real issue is probably more about your insecurities, than your partner. This is not unusual – many people feel the same way to one extent or another.

Emotional baggage from old relationships – with family and friends as well as past partners – can have a huge impact on us. It’s so painful for both parties in the relationship when jealousy rears its head. The one who is jealous can feel out of control and guilty because they’re being this way, even though they may realise deep down that they can trust their partner.

What is important to understand is that jealousy is often about not feeling good enough as it is about a lack of trust. A ‘lack of trust’ and a ‘lack of being good enough’ are two other negative based realities that usually exist alongside jealousy. Think about it, if you didn’t really feel good enough inside, why wouldn’t you expect your partner to go off with somebody that - in your mind - is better?

If the person has experienced it, ‘betrayal’ can be another negative aspect to release in order for the jealousy to fully disappear. The ‘alone’ based reality – a fear of being alone or lonely - can also make people feel insecure in relationships.

Nobody gets to be an adult without being let down in some way. People are human and make mistakes – that’s life. When working on jealousy, we may complete one or more relationships that are related to this issue. (When I say complete by the way, I mean we release the negativity in that relationship, not end the relationship.) For instance, if parents got divorced or one died, then the person may have a deep seated belief that people they love will leave them. Or they may have experienced infidelity in the past and find it hard to trust. Even having brothers and sisters that you competed with or were compared to in any way can lead to this.

I’ve experienced jealousy both from the point of view of being in a relationship with somebody who was terribly possessive and jealous as well as being the jealous one. Neither situation is pleasant or helpful.

Sometimes people feel needed and wanted if the other person is jealous of them. Trust me it’s a warning sign of a lack of confidence that could rear its ugly head further down the line in a variety of ways. When somebody is in fear of loosing the relationship how can they possibly be open, loving and communicative if they’re being eaten up inside with these negative feelings.

What is important to know is that this issue can definitely be resolved. You don’t need to suffer and your partner or future partners don’t need to suffer either… Letting go of the emotional baggage is essential to get there.

One person can easily say to another, “He/She would never be unfaithful to you!” It’s all very well knowing that on an intellectual level, quite another to not get triggered by it! Consider a spider. What harm can a spider do? Yet all over the world there are people who jump onto a chair or run out of the room as soon as they see one. The impact of our emotional baggage is rarely rational…
